Light to the World

My good friend once wrote a song that stated "Seasons they come, and Seasons they go".  What an absolute truth.  Think about the ups and downs that we experience within a single day, nevermind the tears and joy experienced throughout the year.  You lose a friend or family member, you lose a job, the once reliable car is always in the shop, you get a promotion at work, you find out you don't owe on your taxes :) ; these are just a few examples of the craziness that is life.  We are human, it's only natural to feel the effects of life as we go about our daily lives; however, we're told in scripture to not lose our "saltiness".

If we are the salt of the earth, then we can't allow life to dictate when we want to follow God or not.  Matthew 5:13 says, "13 You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men." How do we keep our saltiness? Stay in the word, stay in prayer, continue to trust God, always praise Him whether your up or down, share the things God's done for you; these are a few things that will help keep our mind on the things of God, as opposed to the things of this world.  I'm a huge fan of food, and with that comes salt.  Have you tried eating saltless food.  Yea you can eat it, but it's not going to have that same great taste.  As Christians we are called to be the Salt, to share Christ with others so that they too can enjoy great "food" (oooo I liked that).

Matthew 5:13-16 says, "14 You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." How cool to know that we are the light of the world.  It is Christ in us that makes the darkness not able to stand.  John 8:12 says, "12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” So when we walk into a room and darkness exists, it must flee! Don't let the fact that you've had a tough day make you ignore God, maintain your saltiness.

We can see in Matthew 5 that we have been given the opportunity to spread our light to the world.  If your a musican, a retail clerk or local newspaper person you have the ability to spread your light.  For example, your in line at McDonalds and you know the Lord wants you to pay for the family's food in front of you, watch their faces; surprised, maybe even scared, but you listened to God and let your light shine.  We are going to go through ups and downs, but it's how we respond that makes us salty or not. Choose to trust God and watch your light shine.

  1. Nice. The awesome thing about salt is that it comes from more than one source, i.e. rock, ocean water and sea beds. It is also used for multiple purposes all over the world; like Christians :-)
